East Asian International Relations Theory
The present international political landscape of East Asia is highly complex and no single theory or perspective from the study of international relations is able to successfully explain state behaviors within the region, let alone dynamic intricacies of regional politics. Against this backdrop, the purpose of this project is twofold. First, EAIRT project attempts to develop a new theoretical framework based on empirical analysis of the international relations in East Asia. In theorizing an East Asian international relations theory, we must especially pay attention to the aspect of complex organizing principles that structure the dynamics of relations between states. Secondly, it also aims at developing practical strategies for the states in the region. The complexity that underlie current international relations in East Asia include aspects of China-centered tributary system, Cold War anarchical order, and newly developing governance. In this vein, it is necessary to conceptualize the complexity of historical continuity in a diachronic sense on the one hand, and organizing principle in a synchronic sense on the other. Current theories of international relations seem to provide only partial picture of the East Asian international relations, and theorizing a new EAIR theory requires not only extensive empirical research but also deep theoretical discussion followed by rigorous verification. Moreover, it is important to keep a broad perspective in mind, one that does not lose sight of the dynamics of international relations in other parts of the world. It would be one thing to provide practical implications for Korean diplomacy, but would be another to theoretically link EAIR with that of other parts of the world. In this sense, a theory of EAIR must be able to conceptualize global politics. We seek to build an inter-disciplinary research agenda based on EAIR theory that moves past national and disciplinary boundaries. |
